Season 2021-2022 is rapidly approaching. We don’t yet have The URC fixtures or know who Edinburgh will be playing in The Challenge Cup but we do have some info that allows me to start a fixture calendar.
Edinburgh 1st pre-season game against Newcastle Falcons is scheduled for the weekend of 11/9/21 and our second is against Benetton a week later.
This can only mean that The URC clearly doesn't kick off until the weekend of 25/9/21 at the earliest.
There are 18 regular games plus 1/4s, semis and a final in this new championship making 21 weekends of rugby in total.
There will be 8 Champions Cup/Challenge Cup weekends and the European Finals are confirmed for the weekend of 28/5/22.
There are 9 international rugby matches to be played between Autumn Series and 6N.
I would make an educated guess and say that The URC final will be the weekend of 30/4/22 because the Champions Cup Final usually signifies the end of the domestic season and that as already noted is on the weekend of 28/5/22 with the 1/4s and semis on 7/5/22 and 14/5/22 respectively.
We were told that URC fixtures would not take place on international weekends so that means that the 18 regular games and 2 knockout rounds prior to The URC final have to fit into the 17 free weekends between 25/9/21 and 23/4/22. Does that mean more midweek fixtures?
That 17-weekend number includes Xmas, New year (usually 1872 time) and the 2 rest weekends during the 6N.
A helluva lot of rugby. If, of course, you have a successful season.
The calendar below has what we definitely know so far and I will update this as new stuff gets released and I’ll add it to the pages which you can see on the right.
Fixtures in red are those where the exact day of the weekend the game will be played is still to be confirmed.
