The Freddy & Flinty Show

I’m still buzzing from last night’s awesome victory against Brive but wanted to just put a few quick observations down on paper before my aging memory betrays me.

Look here to see all 10 tries -

Those 10 tries now mean our season total is at 42. There are still at least 10 games to go in these two campaigns and that’s not counting any possible play off type matches. Try total in 2021-2022 was 49 so I think the odds would be pretty short on us topping that. In what was arguably our best season in the last decade 2019-2020, our average tries per game was 3.04. We stand today with an average of 3.8 for 2021-2022. So that is also a good sign.

Nice to see our forwards on the scoresheet too as up to now it has mostly been the fly guys show. However I do have to say a bit about Freddie Owsley.

Prior to last night I had only seen a glimpse of him playing Super 6 for Southern Knights when he scored a try that started with him getting the ball on  one wing and finishing in the opposite corner.

Then in the run up to last nights game I noticed a comment on an Offside LIne Article about the team selection for last night that said that Owsley, “looked to have very little rugby about him indeed he was technically very poor”.

Add to that this was his first run out for Edinburgh of any kind all season and I will admit to being a little nervous. Clearly he was quick but could he play?

Headline tries aside, and they were both very good and showed different aspects of his game, I thought he very much looked the part.

He started off a little shakilly and he admitted that himself in a post match interview with a run from deep in Edinburgh's half that saw him tackled and enveloped in a vulnerable position but thereafter was very effective.

I noted him coming across from his wing when he saw a potential gap opening on the opposite wing and putting in a tackle to prevent a break.

He also made a lovely step and overhead pass for Ben Muncaster’s try, and congratulations to him for his debut try which was a peach and not to rub salt into the Brive wounds their player who attempted to shoulder charge him into touch was un punished for that despite Gilco bringing it to the refs attention and the ref actually having a word with the offending player.

Back to Freddie. I thought throughout the game his positioning and reading of the game was solid and when called upon to tackle did as well as any winger, rookie or not.

He thoroughly deserved his player of the match award.

It was also brilliant to see Boffelli knocking over conversions from wide positions. He managed 5 from 7 for a hit rate of 71%.

Another historic night at the DAM Health. The return of Flinty. A record crowd for the stadium of 6165 and our biggest victory since beating Krasny 78-0 in 2017.

More importantly, almost guaranteed progress in the Challenge Cup and dreams of Marseille in early summer can continue unabated.
