Matt Currie’s 3 tries which went a long way to helping Edinburgh beat Munster on the weekend of 28th February 2025
sent me down a rabbit hole.
I knew that the last hat-trick of tries scored by an Edinburgh player was by Darcy Graham against Bulls in September 2022 and that the one before that was by Boan Venter against Ospreys in January of the same year but that was as far as my surface knowledge went and I thought let's take a closer look.
I’ve been able to go back 15 years to season 2010-2011 and the full list is below but before we get to that there are a few things that my digging found that are worthy of mention.
Edinburgh’s win percentage when we score a hat-trick is 81%. We’ve lost 3 games when our players have scored 3 tries. The two aforementioned ones by Graham and Venter and then way back in 2012 when coincidentally Munster were the opposition and the man who crossed the try line 3 times was Tim Visser.
There have been 8 seasons in that 2010-2025 range where not one hat trick was scored.
Two men have scored a hat-trick on 2 occasions - Darcy Graham and Tim Visser.
Graham is the only Edinburgh player in this time range that has scored 4 tries in a single match and it came in a home win against Agen in 2020 in the Challenge Cup. Here’s the highlights of that and 4 very typical Darcy Tries.
Boan Venter’s scores against Ospreys in January 2022 probably don’t merit a highlights reel but for the second score he does run in from about 12 yards beating a couple of defenders on the way but it is memorable for the fact that he was at the time, and I think remains, the only prop in the history of the URC in all its variations to have scored a hat-trick. I may try to go back prior to 2010 but although I expect the information is there it’s not in one place that I’ve been able to find. Here’s the list as it stands. I’ll update when and if and it’ll be in the side list of stats on the right of the page after today.
